Description

Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is any information that can be used to identify, contact, or locate an individual, either alone or combined with other easily accessible sources. It includes information that is linked to an individual, such as medical, educational, financial and employment information.

Not all PII is equal in terms of importance or sensitivity.

How does PII compare to PHI?

What safeguards are available?

What are different laws to regulate PII on a federal, state, city, and industry-wide level

Examples of laws related to different types of PII are listed below:

  • HIPAA/HITECH for Health related information
  • GLBA for Financial information
  • Privacy Act for Fair Information Practices for PII held by Federal Agencies
  • COPPA for Protects children’s privacy by allowing parents to control what information is collected
  • FERPA for Student’s personal information
  • FCRA for Collection and use of consumer information

Her understanding of the international regulatory environment has allowed her to lead and develop effective global security teams. Vanessa is active within the cyber security community including being on the Board of SecureWorld and the Evanta CISO Executive Summit. She also advises several VCs in their due diligence process around security start-ups. As an Advisory Board member for Cybereason and ReactMobile, private security companies, she utilizes her expertise to assist them in the areas of fundraising, organizational development and strategy. In addition to her private Advisory Board work, Vanessa also led the Board Nominating Committee at the Washington Trails Association, the nation's largest state-based hiking nonprofit organization. Vanessa has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, a MBA from Stanford University and a MS in Telecommunications from University of Colorado, Boulder. She has industry recognized security certifications including CISSP, CISM, GSEC, and CRISC. She also holds the Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) certification.
