Vanessa is a Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) with over 26 years of experience managing technology, security, and risk teams in a variety of verticals. Enabled by her operational experience and ability to execute, she has been successful in leading companies through their cyber security challenges. She has accomplished this through the definition of effective strategy and building high performance teams to respond to the dynamic threat environment. She has led companies through security incidents and enabled organizational learning to emerge with a stronger security posture. Vanessa brings strong interpersonal skills and is recognized for her ability to promote open communication and inspire collaboration. Her empowering and decisive leadership style, coupled with her business acumen, have enabled a solid track record of constructively and successfully addressing difficult situations. She has broad experience working at a global level with start-ups as well as fortune 500 companies. She understands highly structured and regulated cultures as well as more dynamic and innovative cultures. Vanessa has deep experience in cyber security, risk management, governance, and technology. She has held roles in Engineering, Sales, Product Development and Operations within Financial Services, Telecommunications, eComm and SaaS companies including Sprint, AT&T Wireless, US Bank, Expedia, and currently DocuSign. In her roles as the CISO, Vanessa has built and led teams to successfully deal with the ever-changing information security threats. She has a deep understanding of the governance required and the strategic elements needed to run information security as an effective risk management function. At DocuSign, she has led the team through a hyper growth period ensuring that the pillar of security was a key differentiator in the marketplace. Her understanding of the international regulatory environment has allowed her to lead and develop effective global security teams. Vanessa is active within the cyber security community including being on the Board of SecureWorld and the Evanta CISO Executive Summit. She also advises several VCs in their due diligence process around security start-ups. As an Advisory Board member for Cybereason and ReactMobile, private security companies, she utilizes her expertise to assist them in the areas of fundraising, organizational development and strategy. In addition to her private Advisory Board work, Vanessa also led the Board Nominating Committee at the Washington Trails Association, the nation's largest state-based hiking nonprofit organization. Vanessa has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley, a MBA from Stanford University and a MS in Telecommunications from University of Colorado, Boulder. She has industry recognized security certifications including CISSP, CISM, GSEC, and CRISC. She also holds the Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) certification. Vanessa lectures at the University of Washington, teaching a Masters level class entitled, “Leading and Managing Enterprise Information Security” and is a published thought leader in the incident response area.
