Lieutenant Colonel Justin Marchesi serves as the Professor and Chair of the National Security Law Department at the Judge Advocate General’s School in Charlottesville, Virginia. Supervising a department of nine, he oversees the development and delivery of diverse curricula covering domestic and international law topics such as jus ad bellum, jus in bello, war crimes, law of air, space and sea, constitutional law, intelligence law, cyber law, detention law, human rights law, and international legal interoperability in a wide variety of courses, including an ABA-accredited LL.M. program.
Lieutenant Colonel Marchesi began his career as a Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Southern California in 2003 where he earned a B.A. in International Relations and a commission in the United States Army. He was selected later to participate in the Army Funded Legal Education Program and successfully completed his studies at William & Mary Law School after serving as Editor-in-Chief of the William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal. More recently, he received an LL.M. in Military Law from the Judge Advocate General’s School in 2013.
Lieutenant Colonel Marchesi’s past military assignments include Chief of Operational Law Policy, Doctrine, and Interoperability, British Army Headquarters, Andover, England; Deputy Staff Judge Advocate, 2nd Infantry Division and the Republic of Korea-U.S. Combined Division, Camp Red Cloud, Korea; Senior Defense Counsel, U.S. Army Trial Defense Service, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Brigade Judge Advocate, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, New York, and 2nd Security Forces Assistance Brigade, Paktika Province, Afghanistan; Trial Counsel and Admin Law Attorney, XVIII Airborne Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Commander, Bravo Company, Allied Forces Southern Europe, USA–NATO, Madrid, Spain; Adjutant, Task Force Victory, Multi-National Corps–Iraq, Baghdad, Iraq; Adjutant, V Corps Special Troops Battalion, Heidelberg, Germany; and Adjutant, 2nd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia.
Lieutenant Colonel Marchesi is a graduate of the Command and General Staff Officer Course, the 61st Judge Advocate Graduate Course, the Judge Advocate Officer Basic Course, and the Adjutant General Officer Basic Course. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal. He is also authorized to wear the Basic Parachutist badge, the Air Assault badge, the Canadian Parachutist badge, and the bronze German Parachutist badge.
Lieutenant Colonel Marchesi is a recipient of the British Chief of the General Staff Commendation, is licensed to practice in California and the District of Columbia, and is married with three children.
