James Baird is a Founding Partner at the firm Clark Baird Smith LLP. His labor and employment practice is focused on the representation of public and private sector management clients in union representation, collective bargaining, grievance and interest arbitrations, workplace counseling and unfair labor practice matters. Mr. Baird is a fellow in the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers and a member of the American Bar Association’s Board of Governors. In November of 2019, the American Bar Association’s Section of Labor and Employment Law named Jim the recipient of the Arvid Anderson Public Sector Labor & Employment Attorney of the Year Award. Jim is the 11th recipient (and 3rd management lawyer) to receive this prestigious national ABA award. He served for over 30 years as Labor Relations Counsel to both the National and Illinois Public Employer Labor Relations Associations. Additionally, he has served as Chairman of the Illinois State Chamber of Commerce Labor Relations Committee (1978-80) and is a former member of the National Dispute Panel of the American Arbitration Association. Mr. Baird has authored or co-authored a number of books and has spoken extensively on labor and employment relations issues to colleges and universities. He received a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, a Master of Laws in labor law from George Washington University School of Law, with highest honors, and a B.S. from Michigan State University.
